Ken-Bar is a small, privately-owned business located near Boston, Massachusetts. The company began many years ago in Canada as a service for punching holes in convection tubing. In the 1970's, the punching machine was purchased by Ken Hyslip, owner of Griffin Greenhouse Supplies, and the operation was relocated to Massachusetts. The company was part of Griffin's operation and was called Ken-Bar after Ken and his sister, Barbara. The operation was purchased by Peter Bergholtz in the early 1980's and the name Ken-Bar was retained.
Over the years, new products were introduced. Agritape, the root zone heating elements, was first manufactured in 1980. An agricultural plastics product line was developed for season extension, early crop development and increased productivity. The use of non-woven materials as crop covers was pioneered by Ken-Bar working with university researchers. Slitted row covers, colored mulch and IRT film were all developed cooperatively with university researchers, large plastics manufacturers and, in the case of red mulch, the USDA. Currently, work is continuing on Planters Paper, a biodegradable mulch film at the University of New Hampshire in cooperation with Merrimac Paper Company. Ken-Bar remains a small company, employing only eight people, most are long term employees. Some outsourcing is used for manufacturing.
